Using a home made camera constructed from a desktop scanner and a simple lens from a magnifying glass I visited the Mann-Simons home in Columbia, SC. This was the home of an African American family from the antebellum period. The family lived at the site from 1843-1970 where they maintained commercial business in Columbia and the family was one of the first to break the color line for interracial marriage. I tried to imagine what the memories of this space would look like from a child's perspective. The result was haunting vignettes of objects and spaces that only can guess at what life in the home was like for such a unique and historic space.
